The 29th Korea-Japan Regional Policy Research Forum was held on December 4, 2024, at the Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center. The event was co-hosted by the Korea Research Institute for Local Administration (KRILA), the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) of Japan, and the Busan Metropolitan Government.

Under the theme “Regulatory Innovation and Special Deregulation Measures for Enhancing Regional Competitiveness,” the forum served as a platform to strengthen bilateral cooperation and explore policy directions aimed at sustainable growth and boosting global competitiveness at the regional level.

The forum began with opening remarks by Dr. Dong-Il Yook, President of KRILA, and Dr. Hirofumi Takada, Vice President of GRIPS. A welcoming address was delivered by Dr. Hyun-Seok Shin, President of the Busan Development Institute.

The first session featured presentations by Prof. Naoki Fujiwara, Dean of the Faculty of Regional Development at Otemon Gakuin University (Japan), and Dr. Yoon So-Yeon and Dr. Yang Won-Tak, Associate Research Fellows at KRILA (Korea), who shared insights into innovative policy strategies and regional case studies.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Dong-Il Yook emphasized that Korea and Japan face common challenges in the context of local autonomy and regional development, including population decline, regional disparities, globalization, and digital transformation. He underscored the importance of enhancing regional competitiveness in response to these shared issues.
